Aim of the Research Cruise

The aim of the "University of the Sea" Research Cruise is to enable senior researchers from the region to work with young local scholars on marine issues of direct interest to the Australasian and Indo-Pacific region. Students will address specific regional problems (including those unique to tropical and sub-tropical countries) through a program of targeted research.

Cruise Details

The 2008/9 research cruises will be on the German research vessel the Sonne.

    Arrive Fremantle 20 Nov 2008
  • Leg 2: Depart Fremantle 22 Nov 2008
    Arrive Fremantle 18 Dec 2008
  • Leg 3: Depart Fremantle 19 Dec 2008
    Arrive Indonesia 17 Jan 2009

Scientific Aim:

The overall scientific aim of the survey is to collect geophysical and physical data for the Zeewyck and Houtman sub-basins (Perth Basin), Exmouth Sub-basin (Carnarvon Basin), and Wallaby Plateau areas to assist in understanding their petroleum prospectivity, geological setting and environmental significance.

The Course:

  • Students will conduct research under the guidance of local experts. They will participate in onboard lectures, tutorials and e-learning modules.
  • The course will cover aspects of marine geology, oceanography and biology.

Costs:

  • The Asian Neighbours Network will endeavour to pay most costs associated with transport to and from the ship and accommodation while in transit. Accommodation and living expenses during the cruise will also be covered.
  • Passports, visas, medical examinations, travel insurance and incidental charges are the responsibility of individual applicants.

Eligibility:

  • Students must be enrolled in a University to be eligible and should be studying at Honours or Postgraduate level. Students from all Universities, not just the partnership institutions, are invited to apply.
  • We will be seeking applications from Australia, the Pacific Nations, India and Asia.
  • There will be a limited number of successful applicants from each country.

Other Requirements:

  • Short-listed applicants will be required to undergo a medical examination before final selection of participants.
  • Applicants must provide full details of their own insurance when selected for the cruise.
  • Applicants must organise their own passports and any necessary visas.
    - Passports must have a minimum of 12 months before expiry from the commencement of the cruise.
    - Information on visas can be found on the Qantas website.
  • Participants will be expected to collaborate with their research partners over the year following the cruise, in order to produce one or more research papers.
  • Participants must provide a comprehensive report on completion of the cruise.

      The Partnership
      The "University of the Sea" is a partnership between the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, the University of Technology Sydney, the Australian National University, the University of Tokyo, the Korean Ocean Research and Development Institute, Tongji University China, the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans Canada, the National Institute of Oceanography Goa, the Indonesian Research Centre for Marine Technology and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.
