How to apply
to the Marine Science program

There are several ways of specialising in Marine Science:
Marine Science as a subject in a generic Bachelor
degree
You can enrol in Marine Science units as part of
any undergraduate degree that allows the inclusion of Science units
of study (such as the BSc, BA, all combined degrees that include
a Science component, BLibStud etc). Most of the Intermediate and
Senior level Marine Science units of study are available to you
in this way. For information on how to apply for any of these generic
degrees please refer to the Science
Faculty webpage.
Postgraduate Research
Prospective students should contact one or more
members of staff in the appropriate research
area to discuss possibilities for their research topic.
This contact may be made initially
through the Postgraduate Advsior of USIMS, Professor
Antony Underwood. Students in the Sydney region are encouraged
to visit the campus and the USIMS Office. Discussions on intended
research topics are necessary to ensure that there are appropriate
supervisory arrangements and research facilities available in the
proposed area of study. Given sufficient notice a member of the
Department may apply for external funding for research into fields
related to the student's interests.
Application procedures and fees charged are different
for Australian citizens and permanent residents on the one hand,
and foreign applicants on the other. Domestic application forms
may be obtained from the Faculty
of Science. Forms for International
applicants are obtainable from the University's International
Office. The International
Office also includes with the form a copy of the University's
Postgraduate Studies Handbook and the Science Faculty's Graduate
Programs Handbook. These University and Faculty handbooks contain
information on applications, fees and conditions of candidature
which should be read carefully.
When lodging an application form, applicants who
are not graduates of the University of Sydney must supply official
evidence of their complete academic record. An original certified
transcript (not a photocopy) is required. This should include the
date of graduation. If results of the first degree are not known
at the time of application, all known results should be provided,
and then final results should be forwarded when they are known.
A foreign-language transcript must be accompanied by a certified
translation in English.
For students whose language of instruction in
their first degree has not been in English, proof of English language
proficiency will be required. Acceptable English language qualifications
include IELTS (overall band average of 6.5 or better), TOEFL (575
or better plus test of written English at 4.5+), and Cambridge Certificate
of Proficiency in English (Grades A or B). Courses in English for
Academic Purposes can also be taken at the University of Sydney,
at the Centre for English Teaching (Tel: 61-2-9351 4542, Fax: 61-2-9351
4761). International students need to have a Student Visa; information
is available from Australian diplomatic representatives. International
students are only permitted to study on a full-time basis.
Applications will, in due course, be placed before
the Faculty of Science after they have been considered by the Postgraduate
Advisor of USIMS. If applications are approved, candidates will
be notified of their admission and the terms of their candidature,
and the fees payable.
The academic year of the University of Sydney runs
from late February to December. It is usual to start graduate work
at the beginning of the year but work may also be started in the
Second Semester (late July). Applications to start at the beginning
of the year close in October or November of the previous year, depending
on the Faculty and nationality of the applicant. Applications to
start in the Second Semester close in April.
Postgraduate Coursework Study
