The Coastal Studies Unit, under the auspices of USIMS and in collaboration
with the DIPNR (the NSW Department of Infrastructure, Planning and
Natural Resources) and Surf Life Saving Australia, has developed
an innovative graduate program in Coastal Management. This program
is the only one of its kind in Australia, and has been designed
and will be taught by leading researchers and practitioners of coastal
management.

The articulated coursework award system in Coastal Management is designed
for students with a basic training the in earth and/or life sciences
who wish to pursue a career is the area of coastal management, and for
those already working in this field who wish to enhance their knowledge
and skills. The general structure of the Coastal Management program
allows a student to study at the depth they desire, while also allowing
a student to improve their qualification with the completion of further
units of study. There are 3 levels:
- the Graduate Certificate in Applied Science (Coastal Management)
(GradCertApplSc(CoastalMgt)) which requires the completion of 24 credit points of coursework
- the Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (Coastal Management)
(GradDipApplSc(CoastalMgt)) which requires 36 credit points of coursework, and
- the Masters in Applied Science (Coastal Management)
(MApplSc(CoastalMgt)) which requires the completion of 48 credit points.
Each of these awards can be taken full-time or part-time, is available to both local Australian and international applicants, and can be enrolled
in mid-year. All three Applied Science options are full-fee paying. The Graduate Certificate requires a Bachelor degree or equivalent for
admission, both the Graduate Diploma and Masters degree require a Science degree with good grades for direct entry. Transfer into the Coastal Management
program from other postgraduate coursework programs within the University of Sydney is allowed (and encouraged).
Course Overview
This program is provided by the Coastal Studies Unit with external
collaboration from the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and
Natural Resources (DIPNR - supersedes the old DLWC), the NSW Coastal
Council (NSWCC) and Surf Life Saving Australia Ltd (SLSA). The aim
of the program is to present a series of core and associated courses
that will provide a comprehensive introduction to coastal management
theory and practice in NSW, with applications to other coasts in Australia
and internationally.
It will primarily be taught in coastal locations in the Sydney region.
It will draw on local coastal management systems, issues and problems
as part of the program material. It will also make use of the new (2002)
NSW Coastal Policy and Coastal Management Manual to provide students
with an in-depth understanding of all aspects of coastal management.
The program will include units on coastal processes and systems, coastal
zone policy and management, beach management and the application of
geographical information systems (GIS) to the coastal zone.
The program is ideal for recent graduates who wish to extend their
knowledge of coastal and beach management, and for coastal practitioners
in local, state, federal and other agencies and in industry who require
additional training and knowledge of coastal management policy and issues.
It will provide formal training and also enable students to undertake
a supervised coastal management project. A key aspect of all the units
will be a board on-site exposure to coastal processes, systems, issues
and real management problems in the greater Sydney region, and in some units in regional NSW.
A summary of requirements and other information is given below. For the full description of the Resolutions governing admission
to and progression in the Applied Science program, including Coastal Management, please refer to the Resolutions page.

supplied and modified from time to time. For the current list
of compulsory and optional units of study, see the Units
of Study below. For information on class hours, see the timetables
page.
Course Outcomes
The program in Coastal Management is designed to provide advanced
training for coastal scientists, managers and others in the area of
coastal management, particularly as it is practiced in Australia, but
with links to international management practices. Upon completion of
the Graduate Certificate, graduates will possess a practical and theoretical
background in a range of issues related to coastal management. This
can be supplemented and extended upon completion of the Graduate Diploma,
and extended further through course work and research projects as part
of the Masters program. Students completing the full postgraduate program
will have a solid grounding in all areas of coastal management as it is conducted in NSW.

Units of Study
Unless otherwise stated, the Coastal Management courses are available
only to students through this program and are not available to
the wider University community. It is possible to undertake units
other than those listed here with the approval of the Director
of the Coastal Studies Unit, Professor Andy Short.
